The Gorges du Tarn

The Gorges du Tarn et de la Jonte and the Causses form a region with a strong identity. The Tarn and Jonte rivers are still carving this limestone land, dividing it in plateaus.

The Gorges du Tarn is a 53km canyon formed by the Tarn River between the Causse Méjean and the Causse de Sauveterre. These plateaus are part of the Grands Causses regional nature park (along with the Causse Noir and the Causse du Larzac).
The Tarn river has its source in Mont Lozère (at an altitude around 1600 metres) and winds its way between cliffs through a unique limestone landscape.

The Causse Méjean
Meaning “median”or “medium” in Occitan, this plateau was supposedly called Méjean due to its central position between the Causse de Sauveterre northward and the Causse Noir southward.
It is at an average altitude of 950 metres and stretches over 33,000 hectares.

The Causse de Sauveterre
Sauveterre probably means “safe land”. The plateau is surrounded by the Lot Valley northward and the Gorges du Tarn southward. It stretches over near 55,000 hectares.
